Playboy's Miss January 2006 dares to be different.

Athena Lundberg confesses she's in Playboy because her friend kept encouraging her to submit pictures. "She said, 'I bet you any amount of money they'll call,'" says Athena. "I finally told her to take the pictures, send everything in and put her name as the contact because I didn't want to deal with the disappointment. One month after she sent in the photos, she called me and started screaming 'oh my god you got ie Athena, you got it!'. She has a really good eye for this kind of stuff because i just didn't see it. I thought I had no shot at all!"

Miss Lundberg grew up outside of Pittsburg, PA. She's now a college student majoring in communications, with a business minor. Athena Lundberg recently joined a sorority which was quite a change of pace from her teenage years of hanging out with the boys. "When I first pledged, I thought I'd made the worst mistake in my life. But now I have 50 awesome new sisters," she says. My best friend is probably Playmate Jennifer Pershing. We do everything together- and I do mean EVERYTHING!" Athena says with a sly grin.

When her nose isn't buried in textbooks, 22-year-old Athena Lundberg pours drinks to help pay for tuition. When we questioned how an underage student gets to sling shots at a college bar, Athena giggled. "You only have to be 18 to serve alcohol in my state," she assures us. "The people at the bar are like my family to me. I met my very best friend in the world, 2006 Playmate of the Year Kara Monaco there."

Athena Lundberg is grounded and straightforward about her goals in life. "I just want to be married to a good man and have beautiful children," she says. "I'm really focused, and I don't want to get too caught up in the fun and excitement of what's going on right now."

Perhaps Athena Lundberg's most memorable moment was when she had sex with her favorite Playmate ever. One night she was hanging out in the infamous Playboy Mansion grotto when Playboy Playmate Grace Kim came in. "I couldn't believe my eyes," says Athena. "She was the most amazing woman I've ever seen". Grace and Athena struck up a conversation. After a few drinks, the two began to kiss. What transpired is now part of Playboy legend. They got naked and did it right there in The Grotto in front of everyone! And if that's not enough, Hope Dworaczyk shot the entire thing on video for her new reality show! No one can say that Athena Lundberg is inhibited, that's for sure!

"My life became 10 times busier after my centerfold came out," she said. "In college I noticed a lot of people treated me differently because I'm a Playmate, but to my friends and family I'm still they same old Athena. And I feel like the same old Athena too- just maybe a bit more grown up. Becoming a Playmate was really a turning point in my life. I really think I grew and became a better person."

Playboy founder Hugh Hefner became an impressive figure in her life. "Hef is such a great guy and I wish I could sit down and talk to him more because he is so smart. People like that intrigue me. He is truly a genuine, gentle, giving person," Athena Lundberg said.

Her association with Playboy continued when she interned for Playboy.com. "I was in marketing," she said. "That was great. Not only did it show my friends and family that I was a Playmate and beautiful but I really do care about my education. I could have quit school like my friend Brittany Binger did, but I didn't want to lose sight of who I am. I wanted to graduate with a degree. I pride myself that I graduated in four years with honors".

Some might be surprised to find such a sensual beauty with equal measure of brains. "You have to have it together when you are in an industry where people beat you down and tell you that you have no brains, lack common sense or you're just stupid," she said. "For some models, I can say that's true. Some of them match that stereotype. But I'm more then just a Playboy model. Being a Playmate was never an aspiration for me. It just sort of fell into my lap. I would never let that dictate who I am." As she works toward her corporate empire, Athena Lundberg plans to continue modeling, at least in the immediate future.

That's good news for those who can't get enough of her. "I plan to model nude as long as it doesn't get in the way of my career. I hope for another five years or so, I can continue to model on the side on weekends. I'm still young and have a few good years left in me," she said.

Recently Athena Lundberg shot with Juliette Frette for Playboy Special Editions which she really enjoyed. "Juliette and I had real chemistry and got alone great. Especially after the shoot!" says Athena. Wow, we can't wait to see that!
